About Daniel Dempster
For more than thirty years Daniel Dempster has roamed the backroads and wild places of America seeking out and capturing the beauty of this wonderful land. Whether he is photographing the powerful thoroughbreds of Kentucky as they thunder down the stretch at Churchill Downs or roaming a stark and rugged Maine coastline searching for the perfect combination of composition and light, he is at home with a camera in his hand. What started as a passionate hobby in 1980 soon blossomed into a full-time career. In 1988 Daniel had four images featured in the Kentucky Derby Museum. Work with the horse racing industry soon followed and in 1990 he was asked to be official photographer for the Kentucky Derby Festival. He held that position...

Stunning, painterly, surrealistic ! Scanned Velvia - the ultimate medium !

Thank you. I really need to scan more of my work that is on film. It's just so time consuming. I'd love to get back down to the Everglades to shoot birds again.

Film you say! Wow. This is a great shot and the colors are just amazing. I am wondering though if this is perhaps a Tricolored Heron instead? The shape of the head, color or the beak, and white underparts look more to me like a Tricolored Heron. None to matter though. I just hope someday to capture such a shot myself. I love your work. Ro
Daniel Dempster replied:
Thank you. I guess it could be as I'm not truly a birder. I researched it after I had shot it but it is entirely possible I got it wrong. I'll check again and change the title,,, etc if I got it wrong. Thanks for calling my attention to it.
Daniel Dempster replied:
I think you are right. I'll change it. Thanks. I think I probably shot this on Fujichrome Velvia 100.
Carolyn Marshall
Gorgeous colors, even in the water. Nice shot!
Daniel Dempster replied:
Thank you. The sun had nearly set when I shot this and I wasn't sure whether the bird would be still enough for me to get the shot as I had to use a slow shutter speed. This was back when I was shooting film.
