About Jani Freimann
Expressive Portraits Of Animals And People: Jani is an award winning water media/graphite artist who paints and draws people and animals in a loose, painterly style she calls impressionistic realism. "I love playing interesting colors against each other; creating movement and texture with all the different medias mixing the medias as needed to add another layer of character and depth. It fits my adventurous spirit." She intentionally leaves a little to the viewer's imagination so they can be a part of her emotive, story-telling artwork. Jani is accomplished in a variety of medias and offers her fine art skills for pet portrait commissions in graphite, charcoal, watercolor, acrylic and oil. More Here. COMMISSIONS/LICENSING: E-MAIL...

Thanks for getting back to me. I have some very light watercolour paper which I will get my high school students (13 to 16 yrs) to try out over the next week or two before we break for summer then the new school year. Will let you know how it goes

Hi Jani, love your work such variety in stle and subject matter. Am interested in this one as I have done some very simple paintings with some of my young students along this line but I like the strength of the colour id your work. Would appreciate if you could share a bit of your method with me for my students eg. what type of paper did you use? I have just used cartidge or good drawing paper then they use crayons to draw their picture. Once the illistration is completed they then crunch it up firmly then paint a wash of a single colour over it. Would love to do this but with a bit more finese with my teens. Carol
Jani Freimann replied:
I originally did this as a sample for my elementary age students. It's here because I thought it turned out cool. My students are given copy paper to do their drawings. I did this one on Strathmore drawing paper. Much harder to crinkle as it is stiffer and larger paper than copy paper. All the other materials were exactly the same as the students'. Crayons, blue Tempera paint, and water. I suppose you could use oil pastels instead of the common crayons, but crayons are less expensive and are plenty waxy. I would test the oil pastels first before offering them to the class. They may work even better due to them being oily (I'll have to try it sometime). This painting took each a whole yellow and whole white crayon. It also took quite a bit of time to color this on the larger paper. Really, all you need to 'finesse' this to a teenager's level is a more complicated subject matter, that can still be broken down into a line drawing, and larger paper.
