Artist's Description
Paul Victor Jules Signac was a French neo-impressionist painter who, working with Georges Seurat, helped develop the pointillist style.
Paul Signac was born in Paris on 11 November 1863. He followed a course of training in architecture before deciding at the age of 18 to pursue a career as a painter after attending an exhibit of Monet's work. He sailed around the coasts of Europe, painting the landscapes he encountered. He also painted a series of watercolors of French harbor cities in later years.
In 1884 he met Claude Monet and Georges Seurat. He was struck by the systematic working methods of Seurat and by his theory of colors and became Seurat's faithful supporter, friend and heir with his description of Neo-Impressionism and Divisionism method. Under his influence he abandoned the short brushstrokes of impressionism to experiment with scientifically juxtaposed small dots of pure color, intended to combine and blend not on the canvas but in the viewer's eye, the defining f...

I was born in San Jose, California in 1953. In 1954 we moved to the suburbs of Detroit Michigan. We moved again to the suburbs of Chicago in 1956. Due to my Dad’s employment, we moved to Pennsylvania in 1959, so I have lived Penna. in since then. I grew up on a small farm in Pennsylvania and was inducted into the National Honor Society in high school. I was on the Dean's List a few times and earned my degrees in biology and natural science at Muhlenberg College, a small liberal arts college in Allentown PA in the mid 70s. The art history course I took in my senior year at Muhlenberg College and did extremely well in, was very educational, and I enjoyed it. I went on to earn my doctorate in Philadelphia in the late 70s. I...
