Judith Birtman

My works are powerful sculptural clay forms which I hand build, using clay coils, slabs, and altered wheel thrown elements. My Nudes are abstracted forms ,which show movement. My ideas come from landscapes, the hills, valleys the textures of the earth. I see tree forms that suggest a human form. I see the Nude forms in those terms. My sculptures have a feminine earthy quality. My Nudes are one of a kind. As I am building a form, I work on several at a time. I am using an African, South west form of working clay. Adding coils and slabs of clay and then paddling the clay to get the shapes I like. As these sculptural forms grow, one form suggests, ideas for the next form. I like to think they speak to each other. I fire my clay in a gas...
