Werner Theodor Otto Forssmann (1904-1979), German physician. Forssmann shared the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on developing the procedure known as cardiac catheterization, where a catheter is passed through a blood vessel into the heart. He carried out this procedure on himself in 1929. He was later dismissed for not obtaining proper approvals for such experiments. He later switched to studying and working in urology. It was not until after World War II that his technique was applied to heart surgery. He was awarded the Leibniz Medal (1954) from the German Academy of Sciences. Photographed in 1957.
