The artist is my son and is very talented. In high school he was accepted by Chicago Art Institute but couldn’t afford the tuition. He graduated from Fredonia State University with a Fine Art degree.
I really liked how this sand sculpture seemed life like. I think the fact that he is broken adds to his expression, and gives me the impression that he is thinking “What have I done?”
This is a sculpture from the 2013 World Sand Sculpting Competition in Atlantic City NJ.
From the late 1800's to 1943 Atlantic city was host to numerous professional sand sculptors made a fair living entertaining the huge crowds with their spectacular creations that lined the famed Atlantic City Boardwalk. Sand sculptors continued to entertain crowds in Atlantic City through the thirtys and early Forties. Unfortunately, after several decades of these successful exhibitions, a handful of con artists took advantage of the huge crowds these sculptures generated and caused a pick pocket panic frenzy that lead to the outlawing of sand sculpting exhibitions on the Atlantic City Boardwalk in 1944. This law is actually still on the books to this day.
Now 70 years later, it is only fitting...
