I was nearly blown into this canyon while painting it. I had one hand on the pastel and the other on the easel. It was quite the thrilling experience. This image depicts a view of the Grand Canyon below Cape Royal on the north rim.
When I was young I spent a lot of time exploring the woods and countryside near my home in rural Indiana. This innate love of nature was fostered by my father and grandmother and they encouraged me as I began to draw the subjects I found there. This eventually led to plein air painting in a variety of media as I sought out the pastoral in my efforts to connect with the land.
Portraiture is also a subject I hold dear and I never fail to find inspiration in the human face. I love to watch people and the effects of light and life I see on their faces. Capturing the unique story there is a challenge with every face.
