WINTER DUSK I'VE ALWAYS been fascinated by this rustic farmhouse, which sits back from the highway beside an old pasture. It conjures up visions of day gone by, when a farmer would get up at the crack of dawn to milk his small herd of cows by hand. Times have changed, but the house still stands, sturdy and solid against a Maine winter. On this particular day, I happened to catch it just as the setting sun of December caught its windows afire, turning an ordinary, stolid old farmhouse into something soft and magical.

A contemporary realism painter, I have lived my entire life in Maine, and I feel a close connection to the New England landscape. My paintings of Maine country roads, New England cityscapes, and old houses reflect those deep roots. Painting came to me relatively late in life. It wasn't until my late thirties that I picked up a paintbrush, began creating art on canvas, and fell in love with painting. I call what I do "painting the light" because my paintings reflect my passion for light and shadow and their effects on the landscape. As a self-taught artist, I paint what I feel in my heart. Every scene I commit to canvas was chosen because it has struck some deep emotional chord in me, and I try to infuse my work with that same strong...
