This is from my "Out of the Box' series. I painted a group of middle class African Americans that were shown in photos during the 1900 Paris Exposition when W.E.B. Dubois made an attempt to fight racism and stereotyping.
Owens has work in the Arts In Embassies Program in Stockholm, Sweden, and Mbabane, Swaziland. She is part of a traveling exhibition called "Chicago Artists Interpret Shakespeare: As They Like It" presented at the Beverly Arts Center in Chicago, Carthage College in Wisconsin and Bowling Green University in Ohio. She has had numerous solo exhibitions, recently at the Contemporary Art Center in Peoria, IL. Her group exhibitions include "Visions of Our 44th President" at the Wright museum in Detroit with Carrie Mae Weems, Barkley Hendricks and other artists.
