This painting makes me happy!! The colors are really fun and, like his other pieces I own, expertly painted. I want to live in this cottage and walk into the ocean. Ordered it on canvas - well executed. Thank you for the smiles!
Artist's Description
Women in Heian period costume, preparing for a parade. Miyajima, Japan.
This festival, the Kiyomori Festival, is held every year, and commemorates historic events from the Heian Period, on this UNESCO World Heritage Listed island.
The Heian period ran from 794 to 1185, when life in the country revolved around the capital, Kyoto. The period was renowned as a time of high achievement in the arts, especially poetry and literature; it was during this period that the first known novel, the Tales of Genji, was written.
Taira no Kiyomori, after whom the Kiyomori festival is named, initiated a war that ended the Heian period and resulted in greater power for the samurai class. This was is known in history as the battle between the Genji and Heike clans. Many legends of old Japan arose out of this time.
