I have sketched many many self portraits in my art journey. It has little to do with vanity, it has everything to do with a ready model.
This self portrait is the first finished oil painting I have attempted of myself. It has taken me over four decades to learn to embrace my face, with my large nose, thick brows and protruding chin. The only truly non-semetic features I have are the color of my eyes. When I was young I mourned my lighter coloring in wanting to fit in with my Israeli Sabra peers. As a young adult, I longed to shed my non-American facial features. Now in my 40's I'm learning to just enjoy who I am -- a work in progress.
