About the Image

Yverose by Cara McCollum

This piece was created for a charity auction at Whole Foods Market in San Antonio, TX. All proceeds from bidding go directly to the Whole Planet Foundation, which provides small, micro-financing loans to women in third-world or poverty stricken countries to support their efforts to pull themselves from poverty through the creation/expansion of self-owned business. The woman pictured is Yverose from Haiti, who currently owns her own grocery business. She employees people in her village and teaches them the trade as well in hopes they will have new and valuable skills to improve their own lives.

About the Artist - Cara McCollum

Cara McCollum

Graduated from the Savannah College of Art & Design (2002) with a BFA in Painting and a minor in Drawing. As far as the subject matter/imagery, most work tends to be in the non-traditional portraiture category, but I don't limit myself. 90% of the time, the images created are spur of the moment, from basic surrealistic doodles, geometric patterns, dreams. There is no great statement, or underlying theme- but perhaps, that is the statement itself; you can decide that on your own. I much prefer to see how people react to it, rather than try to force something on them. There is no reality, only perspective, so even if you hate it, you still reacted to it, and I find that fascinating. I use a variety of mediums depending on what I feel...
