Drawing has always been my hobby ever since I was a child and as I grew up, I learned how to use different media such as oil and chalk pastels, charcoal and colored pencils, and finally acrylic and oil paints. Since I never had a formal background in arts, I tried to learn as much as I could by taking crash courses and private lessons from different instructors to learn the various techniques on rendering an artwork. And during my learning process, I realized that my passion is more on portrait painting and bringing out the inner essence of each of my subjects.
I admire impressionist painters such as Renoir, Degas and Monet. And as much as I would like to be an impressionist painter, I seem to be drawn towards realism as I unconsciously focus on the details of my subjects. In my younger years, I used to make replicas of impressionistic paintings until eventually I discovered my own style which is to reveal the natural image of my subjects.
My source of inspiration is my daughter Gwen whom I have made several sketches and paintings since she was a toddler. Because of her, I have developed my love for painting children. It gives me a feeling of fulfillment as I paint the pure and natural expressions on their faces. The light in their eyes seems to resonate their innocent outlook towards life and this moves me and drives me to start painting.
Calm and melancholic scenes also attract me especially when they're full of greens – which is my favorite color. I love the calm waters, the trees, the grass, the blue skies and the colors of flowers from a distance. All these inspire me to embrace and look forward to the brighter side of life.
