I live in Melbourne, Australia near the Yarra Valley where there is much inspiration for my work. I find great joy plein air painting during winter when the Wattle trees are in bloom along the Yarra River.
I am a contemporary realist artist who is a colourist. My love of bright colours and intense hues adds life and depth to my art work. My major interest is painting the Australian landscape, especially Central Australia, coastal beach scenes and sunsets. My other passion is still life, involving light and reflections with glass and other shiny objects or surfaces. I love the play of light and the multitude of shadows that are created.
My original training was with Angela Abbott (at Monsalvat) where I learnt valuable lessons about tonal realism using oils.
I was later challenged by Walter Magilton to try another media. This was the start of my journey and love of soft pastels. This is a beautiful medium to work with. It is instant, vibrant and there are no toxic fumes.
My artistic style has been further broadened by time spent with Grace Paleg, Raelene Sharpe, Barbara Mc Manus, Regina Hona and Lyn Mellady.
Currently, I am a member of: The Pastel Society of Victoria, Australia, The Australian Guild of Realist Artists, and The Victorian Artistsí Society. I regularly exhibit in their art shows as well as community art shows.
Over the years I have received several awards, the highlights being: the Peopleís Choice award for the 2011 Religious Art Prize at Chapel on Station Gallery, Artist of the year at Stoney Creek Studios and an invitation to be part of a group exhibition by prominent artistís to celebrate 150 years since the birth of Dame Nellie Melba (held at the Victorian Artistís Society).
Since becoming an artist I have discovered beauty in everyday things such as the layers in the mountains and horizons and the numerous shadows that fall around us. I hope my paintings give the viewer a sense of what I see and feel when I look at the world around me.
