Abstract and Surrealism
Abstract art deals with expressing an idea or feeling in a non - figurative way. The shapes, colors and overall impressions of the piece are entirely open to interpretation by the observer, and strive to create a visceral (or inner) feeling rather than to be attended totally by intellect.
Surrealism can best be summarized as anything which deals with the subconscious through the act of automatism. The original surrealists were famous for depicting figurative paintings of their dreams. Surrealism is not limited to this, but the point of surrealism is to explore the subconscious mind, typically through combinations of elements that are typically seen in more realistic context but in a skewed perspective.
