I teamed up with action comics illustrator Bob Lewis. The cartoons appeared as 'Lewis and Clark's Explorations of La Florida' in the 1990s. The early black and white illustrations ran in 50 papers across Florida with a total circulation over 500,000. For a while they were called “Florida’s Romantic Past”.
Florida History Illustrations
In 2010 I resumed creation of more finished 'heritage art stamps'. Bob Lewis and Richard Gameche illustrate and I refine the images, hand tint them, and write the stories. All are fact-checked by leading historians. The Florida Humanities Council contracted to use 15 illustrations of Florida's Spanish Colonial History. The visitors and convention bureau in St. Augustine-Ponte Vedra, Florida, contracts with us to create 10 heritage art stamps a year. Many are in English and Spanish.
I was born and raised on the St. Johns River in Jacksonville (Mandarin), and have lived in Tampa since 1982. My professional career was ministry. I was the founding director of the state-wide self-help food cooperative program, SHARE Florida. I was a pastor and church worker in the U.S., Argentina and Peru. Later, I was an Environmental Action Minister.
We are all co-creating on the largest palette: planet Earth. Many of our illustrations are about people who acted on their visions of a better world. Now it is our time to act on our own visions. The future is sure to be dramatic given the challenge of climate disruption. Check out our Facebook tab: Help Save Florida’s Future! It’s filled with practical ways to reduce carbon emissions and to be effective advocates for a just and sustainable future.
