About Adinah John

I paint in acrylic and I do predominantly Judaic Folk Art. My art was once described as 'endearing and whimsical' it portrays both traditional and modern Jewish life, Moments of most Holy to those seemingly mundane from the Lifting up of the Torah Scroll to kneading bread.

I am visually impaired and mobility impaired as well, having arthritis in about all my joints. I have to use thicker brushes to hold on to and many days I just cant paint, so I make the most of days I can. I actually have not painted much in awhile and I am hoping to be able to get myself back into habit of painting again. Is so easy to stay in bed when you don't feel good, but I really want to make myself do more. It is struggle though. I will try harder to win my struggle and being a willful and stubborn older gal I will probably do it. I have found that mostly everything you do is done because you make up your mind to do it, and the actually problems that keep you from it are not so much the real reason we don't do stuff but instead the fear of the things that can get in our way. Not going over the mountain that is the problem but the fear of even approaching the mountain.

I am updating site though, adding some older pics that are fairly low res as I had bad camera back then. I was once quite prolific. Most all those paintings are sold.

I am visually impaired and besides weak eyes I see double. I paint detail (by usually avoiding it lol) with a lighted magnifying lens from my eye specialist.

I began painting in September of 2003 to cope with grief. My brother, Jacob, died on Rosh Hashanah morning. You may notice my name is not Jewish. My father was a member of the Blackfoot tribe and my name is typical for a Native, as we have men's first names as last names. I was raised not by my family nor my people, but through what I call now a miracle I was raised in an observant Jewish home. I learned to live Jewishly there and I converted to Judaism officially as an adult. I was not allowed to as a child as my mother still had religious custody of me. I have been living a Jewish life now for so long that I am no longer who I was born as but who I was shaped to be by my new family and people.

I sign all my paintings by my Hebrew name, Adinah, which I go by so have used it in contact info. However, my legal name is Adelle and some of my older paintings which some I still have, though not many, are signed Adelle John. I sign them all Adinah now.

I hope my art is some way transcends the various different branches of Judaism because in my heart I know that although we may not all see eye to eye, we are all ONE people--Am Yisrael Echad! G-d bless you and please come again. I also really hope my art makes you smile and remember how good is our lot and that you feel proud and happy to be Jewish.
