On my 36th birthday I was tired of sitting in a cubicle for hours on end staring at a computer screen so I quit my job. It was time for a change but also time for a break from the corporate world. The original plan was to drive from Philadelphia to Utah to ski at Snowbird Ski Resort for 2 months. When those two months came to an end I drove to Mammoth Mountain and skied until July 4th.
While in Salt Lake and Mammoth I took some side trips and discovered the US National Parks (Arches, Canyonlands and Yosemite). It was love at first sight. It's now been four years of sleeping in my car (around 200 nights a year), camping in a tent along with the occasional random couch, hostel bunk or cheap hotel. The journey has covered 100,000 miles and included every National Park in the lower 48 US states.
The journey will go for one more year. 2014-2015 will focus primarily on the Pacific Northwest, the Canadian Rockies and include parts of Oregon, Utah, California and Texas along with the states between the east and west coasts. I manage to get by on about $1,000 per month for food gas and lodging. Any proceeds from prints purchased here go directly to the gas and food budget since their is no longer a lodging budget. Waking up in random WalMart parking lots, rest stops and truck stops in the front seat of the car isn't the most wonderful thing in the world but it is free! It is also so uncomfortable that I'm more often awake for sunrise photos than I otherwise would be.
There is a blog and a Facebook page to accompany the trip. If you have any interest in links to those, just contact me through the FAA site and I'll send you the links. Remember to get out of the cubicle on a regular basis. Sitting down all the time staring at a computer screen will kill you. But if you are going to die early do it in the presence of beautiful sights hanging on the walls!
