Although images such as these could be made by manipulating original photographs with an image editing computer program or even be produced solely on a computer, Alan uses only optical and chemical special effects to create his Photo-Abstractions. The optical originals are printed via scanning by a professional photographic laboratory using computer control, but with strict instructions to the lab to match the originals as closely as possible so that no electronic manipulation of the image occurs.
