Allison Petroski - Fine Artist
My name is Allison Petroski and I have been working in clay for six years. I have cultivated a unique decorative style and form in that time. In India the jar embodies the Sacred Feminine and that has influenced the intention I hold while making these vessels. As a woman who creates, I feel that in some ways I embody the energy of the Sacred Feminine through the act of making my pottery and adorning the surface with sacred designs. Many of my decorative techniques are based on Indian design, especially mehndi, the art of using henna plants to stain the skin in intricate and delicate patterns. I also work with the firing processes of raku and saggar. These firings produce unique and completely uncontrollable results, which forces me to let go of control of the outcome. It is almost the exact opposite procedure of my mehndi pots, which take countless hours of intricate drawing, focus, and patience. The two techniques balance me out.
