About Amy Holley

I am an Oregon-born, Mississippi-raised fine artist, illustrator and educator. I have been creating art since I was about five years old when my family introduced me to the game of Pictionary. Pictionary showed me that just about anything could be represented or explained in pictures. Over the years, I developed interests in various styles of art: fashion design, jewelry making, purse making, and drawing portraits on cardboard. I tried on many hats until I discovered my love for painting and illustration.

At first I studied and applied the techniques of the Old Masters in my portraits. The slow and tedious painting process allowed me to notice the little details and beautiful flaws in my subjects and celebrate it in my paintings.

Eventually abstract expressionism and color field painting piqued my interest. I love that it celebrates painting with impulsion, emotion and experimentation. When I created these non-objective works, painting became more than something I was good at, more than a love for visual storytelling. It became a release for me, a catharsis.

Since Iíve graduated Savannah College of Art and Design, my artwork began to evolve. I began combining my two very different styles of art. I start off my paintings loosely and expressionistically, with large brushes. Then as the layers build up, I would tame the brush and begin to paint more slowly and deliberately.

My journey as an artist is never-ending. My artwork will continue to metamorphose as I hone my craft and as I find new inspirations, new ideas, and new media. My perspectives of art will also continue to evolve as my life takes me to different places and see new faces.
