Anita Meistrell Putman is a primarily self-taught artist, living and working in Tampa, Florida. Before that, she resided in South Carolina for more than thirty years. She combines her two great passions – animals and art – to create realistic, lifelike portraits of wildlife in their natural settings. Working from photographs taken by herself or her husband, Ted, and observing the nuances and personality of her subjects, Ms. Putman is able to see the beauty and fragility of the wonderful creatures that many of us take for granted.
Ms. Putman has experimented with many mediums, such as graphite, pen and ink, oil, acrylic, and watercolor. Four years ago, she discovered the versatility of colored pencil, and now works exclusively in that medium. She finds that the detail she is able to maintain using colored pencil, as well as the layered effect of color, suits her style best.
Ms. Putman has been a member of both the Goose Creek Artist’s Guild and the Berkeley Artist’s Guild, and has shown her works in many local juried shows, such as the Old Santee Canal Artist Exhibition, the North Charleston Art Festival, the Coastal Carolina Fair, and Guild Exhibitions. She has also shown nationally, primarily in the Art Show at the Dog Show, located in Wichita, Kansas.
