A subconscious fascination with diverse universal elements and their interaction, seem to appear repeatedly as features in my work. Contrasts and effects of fragility and power in the natural world, endless depth in space and contrasting close up surfaces are, to me, some particularly recognizable elements which have been emerging over the course of my few years painting...
If I have the motivation to use a particular theme, a process of transformation can ensue, usually bringing about modifications to the point where the original source is no longer recognisable. Many ideas emanate from somewhere in the realms of the sublime. Automatic or spontaneous doodlings can transport me on a journey into a surreal and fascinating universe, in which I become completely absorbed. Inspiration for many themes have originated from my local surroundings in rural Ireland. Aspects of both the natural and built environment can inspire me, consciously or not. Naturally, they also prove to be useful starting points for opening channels for further exploration; often resulting in images with a subtle, perhaps mysterious intention.
Frustrating moments occur during the process, but these are easily compensated for by a unique sense of realization brought about when, on occasions, I feel that a painting or, even a doodle is somehow going well.
My attraction to exploring varied approaches shows in a tendency to occasionally fluctuate in style. This is reflected in my choice of media which include digital art, oils and acrylics, sometimes in combination with a range of collage materials.
