When I paint, it takes me into another world, a peaceful, happy place.
With acrylics and mixed media, I can achieve lustrous texture which I love.
My subjects include florals, animals, Southwestern scenes, Native American themes, landscapes, nautical motifs and whimsical/abstract/impressonistic images.
Since I retired early from teaching second grade I have time to paint. Like a whirlwind, I began to learn through classes with a wonderful local teacher. I started painting prolifically after both of my parents passed on. I had to have a way to both have an outlet for my grief and as a way to show my joy for life.
I love children even though we don't have any. I miss the hugs from the kids. Teaching them to read was my favorite part. You know, when a child can read, it opens up the world to them. Other subjects don't mean a thing, if one cannot read.
I retired early from teaching little children in Hampton, Virginia Public Schools because of my osteoarthritis but it does not keep me from enjoying life and of course, painting & taking photographs..
I have other hobbies too, such as piano, and TRYING to learn guitar both electric and acoustic.. I like animals for pets. At this time, 'Happy' our dog (part English Springer Spaniel), gets lots of attention. I like cats too.
I am a prolific reader and need more bookcases for my books on a myriad of subjects.
Also I love to travel and hope to begin again when I fully recover from an automobile accident I was in this summer. It broke some bones in my feet, of all places!.
To date, I am still hurting somewhat and limping a bit. The good news is that I don't have to use the crutches now.
After a trip to the Southwest with Don's relatives in 1990, I fell in love with Sedona, Arizona. That is where I encountered 'Kokopelli' who is featured in many of my pieces. He (Kokopelli) has been my mascot ever since.
