I am a metalsmith because I enjoy creating objects of delicacy and smoothness from hard and seemingly unyielding materials of the earth.
My creative spirit is moved by nature, and as a Hillsborough artist, I love to hike along the Eno River and let the woods and the water revitalize and invigorate me . The organic and structural aspects of the natural world are an inspiration , from the simplicity of a curving vine to the intricacies of a thistle flowerhead.
My creative process is one of being in the moment. While I often start out with a sketch, I also enjoy forming, texturing and hammering a variety of shapes in silver and copper, and laying them out on my worktable with various gemstones to see what unusual combinations arise. I often feel as if the materials move themselves into place. Each of my pieces is infused with the wonder and joyfulness of this process.
My jewelry can be found at The Hillsborough Gallery of Art, 121 N. Churton Street, in historic downtown Hillsborough, NC. www.hillsboroughgallery.com
