Wildlife, landscapes, seascapes, portraits and Irish life paintings in oils and acrylics by county Clare, Ireland, artist Avril Brand.
I particularly enjoy doing paintings that depict Irish Life about a time long past. There are still many remnants of that time scattered in the beautiful Irish countryside. Most of those paintings are scenes adapted from old photographs and many are from my imagination.
I am fortunate to live in the peaceful, rural surroundings of Kilrush, County Clare amongst the friendliest people in the world.
Originally from South Africa, my family emigrated to Ireland. We have fallen in love with this country. The fascinating history and the people, who despite many hardships in the past, never cease to amaze me with their brilliant wit and sense of humour.
I love listening to the stories told by the old folks; the strong aroma of peat fires that still wafts through the countryside in winter; the narrow, winding country roads often blocked by a herd of cattle or an old man on his ancient tractor. Cooking on my old solid fuel range in the kitchen of our little Irish cottage fills me with delight as the warmth slowly fills the house and I remember that in my culture too, the kitchen was always the hub of family life.
The laughter, the craic, can still be had in the old pubs where the sounds of traditional Irish music has your feet tapping while you enjoy a pint
The beauty of Africa will never be forgotten, however. The wildlife in particular is very much a part of my fondest memories. The conservation of the animals and their habitat is of extreme importance to me. A percentage of every wildlife painting sold will be donated to conservation and animal protection organisations.
