Backyard Civilization is an organisation of artists - Visual, Language, Performance and Sound. With its roots in the grounds of Fort Kochi and an expanse that reaches the artists across the globe, BC is the fertile field for new and unforeseen fusion in art-making. BC is also the promised hermitage for both compulsive academicians and dandy autodidacts.
BC as a space for art-practice is conceived as a house that hosts many ideas and point of views, a venue for arts to fuse and multiply. Its spaces are compassionate, comfortable and hence creative. The already existing collective at BC have worked hard to make this an opportunity to learn, teach and create. With their efforts, the available spaces are re-designed and renovated, and it is ready for more.
In the long-short history of Kerala, its artists have struggled to change the outlook of the society which views art as something alien to real, which imagines art as a luxury commodity for the rich. Kerala’s communal conscience believes that art has/can do nothing with the past or present affairs of the Local. But art is a daily-life article, it is something that happens organically in a free and healthy society, not something from outside - our own artists have exerted on many historical occasions in the past.
BC is a new collective of artists and friends of art; painters, photographers, writers, musicians, singers, performers – working towards doing something for the efforts of their predecessors, to change the way things are, to alter art-conscience.
This era of information revolution has opened previously unimaginable venues for art practice. We at BC aim to make use of this opportunity to explore and implore our art, in a way that it is Local yet International. We collaborate with many artists to make a variety of art products including objects, sound pieces, performances, installations, paintings and sculptures.
BC also aims to reclaim public spaces and turn them into interactive art spaces with the help of the local communities. Such spaces include long-term abandoned buildings to elaborate street corners, under-passages. We believe that such spaces deserve to be wide platforms for art which can facilitate new learning and interacting opportunities for artists and local communities. Such spaces can be turned into new social platforms of art and cultural understanding. Our artists aim to create a new visual aesthetic incorporating streets and ill-used public spaces as their venues and muses. Documentation, analysis and revaluation is also a part of this process.
