Barbara Bowen Wins 4th Qtr Photo Contest For Florida Division Of Forestry

New Port Richey, FL - May 23rd, 2011

This photo of an immature Red Shouldered Hawk was selected as the overall winner for the 2010 Autumn Photo Contest sponsored by the Florida State Forests. The Hawk was seen in Picayune Strand State Forest down in the Everglades. I had just finished hiking the Sabal Palm Trail, my 30th Trailwalker hike, when I heard a nearby Hawk crying out. I waited patiently on the forest road just outside the Trail entrance and soon he landed on a pine tree branch near my vehicle allowing me to capture a few shots.

Spring Greens And Azalea Blooms Photo Receives Top Honors In The Recreation Category In The Florida State Forest Photo Contest

New Port Richey, FL - July 9th, 2010

We received Top Honors in the “Recreation Category” in the 2010 2nd Qtr Florida State Forest Photo contest for our photo from the Trailwalker Meet-up back in April. This photo is of the Ravine Trail in Lake Talquin State Forest. My hiking comrade Peter from My Florida Hikes is hiking in the Foreground. I don’t know where Janie scooted off too! I think she was ID’ing a Muscle Tree or something. This photo was hard-earned for all. We endured hiking several steep hills in a 3 mile loop, not to mention we all pulled a few ticks off ourselves later that night at camp from this trail. But the blooming wildflowers made the trek, the drive, and the ticks worthwhile. Along this trail we were fortunate to encounter blooms of the rare Flame Azalea and Chapman’s Rhododendron. Azaleas, Mountain Laurels, and Iris were also in bloom. You are guaranteed natural beauty along this trail in the Sp...

Return Loop In The Evening Sun Voted Best In Show By FTA

New Port Richey, FL - June 23rd, 2010

I was hiking along the National Scenic Florida Trail in Seminole State Forest last fall to complete my 10th and final hike for my Trailwalker badge. As I was completing the 10 mile loop, it was getting fairly late in the day and the orange glow from the evening sun made for great photos. I was able to capture the evening sunlight falling on a typical Florida Pine Scrub. This photo was voted "Best of Show" in the 2010 Florida Trail Association photo contest and just appeared in the July Issue of the Footprint Magazine, the official Magazine of the Florida Trail.
