Photography is a very self-centered art. Everything I photograph is about how I see something. Itís about how I imagine something. My photographs are all about me. Theyíre about how I see a leaf with a water drop on the tip and visualize it disappearing into the background of that hazy rainy day behind it. I have the technical skills to make that happen, to make the piece of paper with that picture appear on it. But that is not a photograph. Itís just an image on a piece of paper.
One of my most recent and well received pieces was of a calla lily. I know that some people will look at it and know that itís a calla lily. What I want is for them to look at the piece and not even think calla lily. They may know itís a calla lily on a subconscious level, but all I want them to see is art. That itís a calla lily has no bearing. This is no longer an image on a piece of paper. This is art.
Even though my photography is all about me, what I really do is I bring my art to you. That's the part of photography that I love the most. That part is about you being you and bringing what you see in my art into your own life and having it matter in your life, for you. That is the most gratifying thing about photography, about art.
Linda Scott Galok recently featured me in her series 'An Artistic State of Being', published by Yahoo!'s Associated Content. Linda did an exceptional job of portraying me as a person and as an artist as well as portraying me as an artist with bipolar disorder. Please be invited to get to know me and to discover that having bipolar disorder, while not an easy thing to live with, does not condemn an individual with the illness to a non-productive life.
