I am a self-taught artist with no formal training. I began painting in watercolor at age 12 while living in England. I loved the lush green country side and cottages. No matter what I paint I always come back to nature, cottages and my childhood passions. As a teen, most of my time was spent drawing faces and painting watercolors. I was fortunate to have a teacher enthusiastic in a variety of media and encouraged me to embrace all. Though I dabbled in different media in school, it was watercolor I loved.
Later the Internet became my art gallery. I was approached by a client to paint a Hawaiian sunset from his vacation photos – in oil. It was a medium I had never worked in, that I could remember. This successful exploration set the plan for my first show. I painted for one and a half years working toward my June 2003 show where I exhibited 32 pieces and sold 15 plus 2 commissions, one based on a piece I had sold at the show.
I enjoy commission work – to bring to life someone’s idea – to maintain the heart of that person’s concept or portrait and offer my vision. The challenge becomes understanding the client’s view and hoping to take it further. It involves a lot of listening, for me. I also am committed to making sure the client is comfortable to make suggestions/comments as I go along, and I keep in touch during the process. The pleasure is becoming familiar with the face that is dearly loved, the place so full of memory it gives joy each time it is viewed. To hear their satisfaction, delights. The look of a recent client’s face was more than words could express.
