I grew up in a family where being creative was encouraged.
As well as getting out in nature...which wasn't always possible in suburban ohio.
So these two elements have been a constant in my life;
creativity and the natural world.
I have been blessed to be able to travel and work in remote and beautiful areas of the world.
Which become the inspiration for my artwork.
I am self taught in both batik (21 years) and watercolor (6 years)
Batik is the process of using wax and dyes to create designs on fabric. Wax is heated in a tool called a tjanting and then passes thru a copper or metal tube on to the fabric. Where the wax is placed, the dye cannot penetrate. I work in layers to create a design. Wax some, Dye some. When the dye touches the fabric, it spreads like water. So the wax creates a border that controls where the dye can go. Salt creates a unique effect as well. When the piece is finished, the wax is removed. I then stretch the silk on foamcore using linen tape.
Each piece is signed and ready to be matted and framed under glass.
I use only high quality silk fabric and pure beeswax in my work.
And, having never taken a class, I have created my own unique style in this beautiful medium.
I also design knitting patterns.
I knit every day and think if i didn't knit i would probably take up smoking.
Its just what i do....
I am an artist.
Using wax, dyes and silk or water, paint and paper, i interpret what i feel thru the filters of my eyes.
