Catherine became known for her photographic skills while yet in high school, where she not only developed her own pictures but also won several local awards for her black-and-white still-life compositions and in-depth portfolio of “Children of Hawaii”. Her first year of study at Brigham Young University-Hawaii was paid for by a Jack-in-the-Box Western Regional Scholarship which she won for a portrait of a young Polynesian mermaid.
