CHARLES STUART (peterthepainter)
1952 -

Since joining FAA I have produced most of my work with uploading here in mind. You could view my work here as a developing sketchbook of ideas. If I create it ...it goes on this page immediately. So follow the live show...see how the work develops as it happens...posting most days...like a visual blog!

When you are really openly creative...getting across to your audience just what your work is about...is problematic.
Having to define your work is frustrating and producing more work is much more fun.
People like to be given a soundbite...something simple to label and file things for them...

Sorry but I can't do labels...not for myself.

Artist's often like to create variations on their success's...you know create a 'look' or a 'style' or a sound.... something that defines them and helps them to be presented and understood easily.

...I work in whatever medium I like whenever I like...whatever takes my attention...I like to create work that is meaningful...transcendent would be better.

...the more stunning, beautiful images that I create the better I like it...Painting was what I started out with and I look to Rembrandt, Picasso, Rothko, Richard Hamilton...his 'Interior II' stunned me at the Tate gallery in 1968/9. I care deeply about surface quality and color as well as the content of my paintings...

...I photograph and love to create and alter images digitally...I make paintings with video which you can see embedded on this site or on youtube peterthepainter's channel...

...I make wooden sculpture such as the 'Icarus' work that is here in the form of paintings...

...so I paint with oil on canvas and oil and gouache on paper and board...but I also paint with a camera, a computer and with video...

...My themes are many and varied...some of the work is heavy and some light (like led Zeppelin)...

...Abstract, figurative, expressionist, impressionist, cubist...whatever...It does not bother me...I have no one to please but myself...and my audience is whoever relates to what they see in my work...

Artists can be trapped by financial success and feel they need to repeat that success...my take is this...

MAKE ART NOT MONEY

...sure selling is fun but if you need the money too much then compromise is your master.

...get up each new day and create with a fresh heart and clear eyes...travel hopefully and make sure not to arrive at disappointment.

...Robert Hughes has the truth about the art market in his film 'The Mona Lisa Curse'....Simple honest truth..I recommend it to you here.

...Where do I come from?...well...Marvel Comics...I used to own Spidey *1, X-Men*1, and many hundreds more...Led Zepperlin, Roxy Music, Jefferson Airplane, Mozart, Beethoven, Satie, Joseph Heller, Scott Fitzgerald, A L Kennedy, Donna Tart, Ridley Scott, Kurosawa, Orson Welles, Don Mc Cullin, Bruce Davidson, Robert Hughes and hundreds more great artists, writers, musicians etc.

Have style but not 'a style' Be your own boss...and don't let the b*****ds grind you down...

Diary Entry

I saw a pigeon.
It was dragging itself across the floor of the courtyard.
There was desperation in its movement.
There was fear in its eyes.

I saw a cat.
It was stalking the pigeon.
The cat thought the pigeon was a sitting duck.
That's what the cat thought!

I saw a vet.
The vet saw the pigeon.
She declared it old and tired, injured and not worth saving.
It was only a pigeon,
One of thousands of pigeons,
Not an individual.
One of the many, not one of the few.
They live, they die,
That's it.
There will be another one along in a minute.

I saw fear.
I saw desperation.
I saw it was only a pigeons fear, a pigeons desperation.
I saw that it didn not matter, that it was life and death.
It did not matter to the vet.
It did not matter to the cat.
It mattered to the pigeon at the time but it does not matter now.

The cat was wrong about the duck.
It was not sitting, It was waiting on events.
Hoping for intervention...
a helping hand.

The vet put the pigeon to sleep, at least she said she would.
The cat sat on the mat.
I turned on the TV and reached for a beer.

2

I saw a cartoon, a cartoon of a man.
I saw him turn, he turned into a van.
I saw a van turn into a road.

I saw in the distance a vanishing point.
It vanished in air, it vanished in space.
The road disappeared, it was gone from this place!

I saw a character, he was a boy.
I saw the boy change, change into a man.
The man became old, changed into his shorts.
He was not going to sleep, he was just doing sports.

I saw an aeroplane fly into a tower.
The tower belched fire as the aeroplane blew up.
People jumped out and fell to the ground.
People looked up and got out of the way,
except for a priest who knelt down to pray.
He prayed with a victim and gave the last rites,
when down fell a person and put out the lights.

I saw a tower along with its twin.
They both disappeared, exploded within.
They did not vanish,
they changed when they bust.
They changed into rubble...
rubble and dust.

I saw a great cloud.
It darkened the sky.
It made bad people laugh and good people cry.
Some danced around, fired guns in the air.
While others ran away with flames in their hair.

I saw a great vengeance gathering pace.
People made angry, prayed for gods grace.
Good and bad people claim God on their side.
How can that be? He is not that wide.

3

I saw a great God lit up in the sky.
He sits there watching as good people die.
They die in the day and they die in the night.
They die when they love and they die when they fight.

I saw all the saints get into a van,
Chanting a beautiful...blame it on man.
The van turned into a lost country lane,
Just when it appeared to all be in vain.

I saw a big final, a big final end.
The final then vanished which just left...
The end.
