About Clifford Etienne

Incarcerated since 2005, Clifford Etienne is the former heavyweight boxer known as 'The Black Rhino'. He was born and raised in south Louisiana. A rough childhood and a complex set of bad breaks resulted in his incarceration in Angola, LA. Now, he has picked up his brushes and returned to his painting, through which he reveals his emotional and humorous interpretations of life. His work celebrates cultural tradition in New Orleans, where his mom grew up in the St. Bernard Project, and around the Louisiana countryside. He is working on a series that memorializes the New Orleans Housing Projects as they were in their heyday, as well as some beautiful renderings of the Second Line tradition, but always with people, dancing, singing, and living their lives with enthusiasm. His painting helps support his daughter and pay for his legal defense, as he works for relief from mandatory minimum sentencing that will leave him to die in prison.

Cliff's work is being collected by a number of high-profile clients, in New York, New Orleans, Miami and Los Angeles. The City of New Orleans purchased 'Double Dutch in the Calliope', and it hangs in the 2nd District Police office today.

Guy Lyman Fine Art, 3645 Magazine Street in New Orleans has supported Etienne since 2013 and always keeps a collection of originals for sale, so drop by when you are in New Orleans.

Cliff creates portraits on commission when he's not working on his originals. Please contact us if you would like to purchase or commission an original painting, or use the Shop button to order prints and other memorabilia.
