Colleen Brown is an Australian-American artist now residing permanently in the United States. 'My art has evolved over the past twenty or so years through much study, consistency of effort and continual application. The beauty of the everyday, often overlooked, constantly inspires me. I endeavor to attain a level of realistic detail which provides the observer with a sense of 'being there.' I am currently working on a series of contemporary still life pieces predominately in pastel. I am always excited by the immediacy of the pastel medium and the vivid array of pure pigmented colors helps to create the luminosity I strive to achieve.'
I begin each piece by arranging found objects from my home and creating a pleasing composition. The work proceeds through a series of sketches to a full-sized drawing, which is transferred to a sanded paper surface. I start with hard pastels to block in my larger areas and use my softest pastels for the highlights of each piece. This allows me to keep my pastel paintings 'thin' and eliminates the need for fixative which can shift or dull the rich colors.
I continue to expand myself and my art by attending a variety of workshops and seminars related to art, business and personal growth. I have works hanging in several major galleries and private collections, have held successful one-woman shows and I am regularly teaching highly attended workshops in pastel, watercolor and colored pencil. I am sought after for commissioned portraits, still life works, florals and landscapes in Australia, Europe and here in the USA.
For me, art is a passion and I am always drawn to try something new. Who knows what might be next!! Stay tuned!!
