D. Laird Allan was born in Toronto in 1949 and grew up in Windsor, Ontario. In 1971 he joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and went west to the training academy in Regina, Saskatchewan. From there he was stationed to British Columbia, where he spent 30 years. 29 of his 31 year career were spent in the traffic and collision reconstruction field.
