Life is the greatest show on earth, a carnival shaped by our dreams, where the magic act of beauty appears and disappears like children on the merry-go-round and the summer clouds above.
My life is a constant process of shaping and reshaping. I am the daydreaming boy in the back of the room with paper and pencil in hand, the child in the apple tree with his head in the clouds, the teenager in solitary confinement, the runaway, hitchhiker, hobo, and bum. I am that person with less than sterling work ethic, who just can't seem to keep a steady job, and am no stranger to stormy weather and disability. I have played the roles of ditch digger, dishwasher, prospector, janitor, dock worker, construction worker, deckhand, farm hand, psychiatric nurse, psychiatric patient, milkman and fool. My eyes have witnessed the blinding light from the explosion of an atomic bomb and starlight reflected on the river . My feet have explored the city streets and wandered in the desert. I have loved and been loved. I follow my dreams.
My small part in life is directed by conscience, intuition, and vision. For questioning the racism, sexism, and bigotry of the religion I was brought up in - excommunication was a blessing. For peacefully protesting and refusing to attend wars of aggression - jail was my honor. For expressing such views, being beaten and left for dead, damaged my body, but strengthened my convictions. After having 20-30 strokes, I am left so thankful for having such true friends in medicine and life, and so thankful that life has granted me a near full recovery and the opportunity to continue. The diversity and challenges in my life are reflected in the many styles and textures of my art. Life remains the greatest show on earth. I am still the daydreaming boy in the back of the room with paper and pencil in hand, the child in the apple tree with his head in the clouds.
