I fell in love with painting when I was in college. I always liked making art, but it wasn't until I was studying at the university that the passion for painting really hit me. Initially, it was the impressionists that grabbed my heart. Then I started looking at the abstract expressionists, and the bay area figure painters, and I was hopelessly lost for all else.
I choose to paint non-objectively. That is, when I make a painting, I am not trying to represent something seen in the physical world around me. Instead, I wish to create something new, in and of itself. This new form will reflect my being, and my perception of the world, at that moment in space and time. Reference to landscape or figure may exist in my work, but this is not intentional - it is simply a result or who I am and where I come from, as well as who the viewer is, and what they bring to the work.
Starting a painting with a particular color, or shape that calls to me, a dialog begins between the canvas and myself. Layers of paint build up, obscuring, and in some places revealing, what lies beneath. The painting gains a sense of history from the process of creating it. There are moments of intense energy, and times of great calm and inactivity documented on the canvas. This process may go on for a day, a month, or longer, until the painting lets me know that it is finished, or right.
I hope you enjoy the work!
