I was born an artist and have been creating and drawing since I was old enough to hold a pencil and discern shape and color. I have been a self-taught surrealist/abstract artist for as long as I have been conscious of my artistic nature and abilities. Around 1995, I began taking classes in old master realism painting techniques (tonal painting) from Dominic Vignola in Oak Park, IL and ended up taking classes for the next three years which included still lifes and portraits in oil. I learned so much that I began using these tonal techniques in my subsequent abstract/surrealist artwork. I’ve also taken classes in figurative sculpture techniques at the Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Art in Chicago as well as art and photography classes in college.
My artwork can be summarized as a graphical representation of a skewed reality from the perspective of metaphysical and neo-scientific philosophy in which existence and humanity are but a theory to be postulated and argued until the end of time and not a fact. While our senses betray us at every turn, our subconscious minds attempt to guide us to the true reality, devoid of the preconceived notions and prejudices of a sentient being. It is my mind that guides me while I paint and not my animal senses.
I am constantly experimenting with new techniques and concepts that will satiate my furtive imagination and philosophical nature. I view and paint things as they ‘may be’ or ‘will be’ or ‘may never be’ but which are ‘real’ none the less in my imagination and on my canvas. My credo of artistic creation is ‘If I’ve seen it, I won’t do it’. My artwork, at times, may appear to have a consistent theme running through it but is actually in a constant state of flux and evolution as is my nature as a philosopher-painter.
