Born and raised in New Mexico, Deb Owens moved to Washington state's Columbia River Gorge area in '79. Deb states, ' It's quite different from the southwest region but just as beautiful.' Deb, who is a self-taught artist, first started drawing at the age of 7. She started oils in '67 and later discovered pastels. Deb describes pastels as ' wonderful, spontaneous, direct and forgiving.' Deb started painting various subjects of southwest culture, mostly people, animals, wildlife and landscapes, because each personality is different and each painting is a new challenge.
Deb likes to experiment with different mediums other than pastels such as acrylics, watercolors and watercolor pencils. She also painted on ornanments, leather, tree conchs and old crosscut saw blades.
Most of Deb's works are commissioned. Her paintings have exhibited in several competition shows and have won numerous awards from the Society of Washington Artists, county solo shows.
Also, Deb has participated in Artists of the Gorge juried exhibitions. Deb is a new member of the Northwest Pastel Society. She has recently started painting again part time and looks froward to entering some of the art shows around the states. Her care and attention to detail is evident in many paintings already on display.
