As a teenager, I studied portraiture in pastels and oils with Guy Bernardo of San Diego. On moving to San Francisco in 1972, I became captivated by the Victorian homes, which I sketched and painted, selling my work as a street artist. In 1975, my husband and I opened our own gallery in San Francisco and I began depicting Victorian homes from all over the US in various media - pen & ink, watercolors, silkscreens, cross-stitch and ceramics. After 25 years designing for the Victorian Shoppe, I returned to my first love, portraits of people and animals. I alternate between oils and pastels. The subject, its texture, and the quality of light I wish to achieve will often dictate which medium I use. While I enjoy pastels when drawing animals, I prefer the bolder color choices possible with oils when I do portraits of figure studies. I am an exhibiting member of the Pastel Society of the West Coast, the Pastel Society of America, the Marin Society of Artists and the National League of American Pen Women (for artists, authors and composers). More of my work can be seen at www.debbiepatrickart.com.
