There's a small, yet expansive, corner of Montana where you turn off the lone highway onto the country dirt road, leaving behind the other traffic as well as the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Winding down into the valley through the landscape where the Big Sky seems to have reached down and folded the earth in on itself like mounds of bread dough, you come to a place where pioneers homesteaded over a century ago, attempting to tame this land and make a life for themselves.
These pioneers turned homesteaders quickly learned this was a land that could not be tamed and that to survive, they must interact with their environment as an ally not an advisory. They learned to interpret the world around them for the clues that enabled them to survive and thrive. Their unique world view created a family and countless memories.
I am a descendant of these pioneering homesteaders. My Grandma handed down to me the secrets of how to interact with this land with a pioneering perspective: how to read the clouds, talk with the animals, smell a thunderstorm brewing, help a neighbor, and respect Mother Nature. Much like Grandma instilled these values of Big Sky Country with me, I now share them with you through my art.
