I am an artist who is interested in producing, selling and exposing my artwork. My goal is to continue to discover myself through various forms of art. I was born in Las Vegas Nevada to Darlyne Wiliams and Charles Rogers. At a young age I was drawing. I had a serious fascination with anatomy and muscle structure. I have always had an appreciation of the many forms of art including music and theatre and I excelled in both visual arts and music as a vocalist. My passion always had and does reside with the visual arts although I do still sing.
Through many teachings, tedious practice and a fine arts Education I've learned to understand speak of and create work in several ways all while delving into my concepts and thinking about them in abstract ways. Although my passion resides within that of the graphic art world I am a student of art and willing accept and challenge myself by trying new methods of creating work.
My recent body of work has been focused on the physically adapting and rendering metaphorical, figurative phrases and possibly popular slang that relate to human states of being. I have been creating work that has been progressively delving into the concept of words and popular phrases in relation to the human psyche dealing with emotion, mental illness, and other states of being. These phrases come from secular, religious and popular culture. This new body of art is strange much like the work of Raymond Pettibon who also pulls inspiration from popular culture.
I created physical adaptations of my interpretation of popular phrases and jargon used to describe different aspects of the human condition. This new conceptual body of work has even lead to me naming my pieces. The titles themselves could actually guide the viewer to understanding my own personal opinion on the piece but without the initial knowledge of the title the viewer is free to read them how they like. Depending on the phrase these images can be serious or light hearted. These works can also be interpreted in a sinister way also because there are not many key staples to completely lead the viewer to one particular conclusion. My earlier pieces have a few aspects from different ages such as classical anatomical form and the concept of pathos, which is prevalent in Hellenistic Art. The first pieces were somewhat grotesque. The images deal with the removal of hindrances whatever they may be to any person. It is about the strength and perseverance of the human another concept that was prevalent in Hellenistic artwork. This imagery is heavy in narrative and each peace tells a story, although maybe not in depth. Some of the imagery is a piece of a narrative and are collectively telling a story. Everything within each image is of importance and helps the viewer to read the piece. Itís my belief that the less the viewer knows of the phrase that the piece was created from, the more creative the viewer is in their interpretation.
I continue to work in ink wash, which still gives me the fleeting appeal to the images created in this medium.
In conclusion my recent body of work is exploring my interest in interpreting phrases we use to describe different aspects of the human condition whether mental, physical spiritual etc. During this process I have been able to remove myself from earlier formal ties and concepts and Iím able to explore new ones and new ways to create composition while exploring language and hyperboles that can be transformed into physical representations.
I am now a Graduate with my Bachelors degree in Fine Arts from Columbus State University. I have learned much and have learned to use a few more materials. I have now delved into the world of painting, mixed media and digital drawing in which the page is deeply comprised of. During my college career I have also discovered my love for the commercial arts and love for concept design, sequential design and character development. I am currently working toward a more masterful understanding of painting and concepts therein.
