About Earl Jackson

Living in New England gives me plenty of opportunity to paint the wonderful scenery of seaside, seasons, vistas, architecture and the spirit of our quaint olde region. I have only limited formal training in oil painting, but I have been painting most of my adult life.

Most of my training was in the area of color theory, and I paint a little differently because of that. I do not want my paintings to look like photographs, because to me, photographs look flat, even though they capture three dimensional images. A painterly approach sees certain colors as receding or coming forward in the composition. It also sees color as just as much a part of the painting as the draftsmanship, layout and design. These things explain why my oil paintings are not exactly the same as photographs of the same images. They also explain why my paintings have sparkle and elements in them that would never appear in a photography. Sometimes you will see lines, colors or brushstrokes that serve no other purpose but to visually enhance the painting, flow of the eye, or some other aspect of the treatment.

I am also not a plein air painter, because I think that too much sunlight washes out the colors and makes everything look too white to be pleasant as art. I do not enjoy looking at plein air paintings, and it is the reason why I work exclusively in the studio from photographs that I have taken outdoors myself. To me the painting is more about the art, than than about photo-realism. If I wanted my pictures to look like photographs, I would not have spent years studying color theory and old masters techniques. I would have simply bought a good camera!

I do not limit my work to oil paintings alone, I use any and all means that I know how to use to get the effect that I am looking for. To me, the art in painting, is not the technique, not the brushstrokes, not the mediums used, but the end created result. Atmosphere and feeling is what I am after. Many of my works are multi media, and many included digital effects. I am an artist, not a purist. My art speaks for itself. Hope you enjoy it.

I am a disabled American artist, and I humbly thank you in advance for any purchases you make, because it helps me to survive, and to continue painting, which is what I love to do. God bless you all for your compassionate support. I do commissioned work on request.
