Artist Statement
My mixed media pieces reflect both my love of the Ocean and my concern for all the creatures that live there. As an avid SCUBA diver I have witnessed first hand both the vast beauty below the surface and the pressures that we place on this amazing space. My current work focuses on the ways that the Ocean and man interact and what may come from these continued meetings.
In my most recent charcoal drawings I question what the underwater inhabitants might do with the now prevalent plastic component of their lives. I am imagining how the animals could use plastics to their advantage and I am exploring how the creatures from the sea will evolved and combine plastic into their DNA structures. Where once fins and tentacles were the norm, now plastic forks and computer cords reign.
In my wax collage work I focus on the beauty of the ocean and the magical qualities that draw me to it’s depths again and again. I use hand dyed fabrics to capture the ever-changing play of light under the surface while illustrations of some of the oceans creatures float suspended in wax just below the surface. As a final step, I carve back into the wax to reveal colors and textures that may otherwise remain hidden just as oceanographers and marine biologists are uncovering new and wondrous facts about the oceans that surround us.
