Hello! Iím Ethan Abelov, an Oregon native and local photographer from Eugene, Oregon. I have always loved taking pictures, but it wasnít until a few years ago with the rapid advancement and affordability of new cameras that I really began to focus (ha!) on my craft. A large number of my photographs are taken on my daily commute to and from work at the Eugene Airport. I always have my gear with me in case I find something unique, beautiful or inspiring. Often times, I spot subjects on private property, so I will knock on a strangerís door, introduce myself and ask for permission to take pictures. So far everyone has given me permission! This is a great icebreaker and Iíve met some wonderful people over the years.
I was in the U.S. Air Force for 5 years as a Meteorological Technician, and my love for all things weather related goes back to my earliest childhood years. As a result, I incorporate the sky and clouds to convey a particular mood or feeling in a photograph. I often have several locations staked out in advance and then wait for just the right lighting or weather conditions. I have waited for up to a year to get one perfect picture! I love to photograph old or abandoned houses, cars and barns. I strive to find the unique beauty in something that people pass every day completely unnoticed
Generally speaking I am NOT interested in taking an exact Xerox copy of what I am seeing, thatís boring and easy! Rather I try to convey a sense of meaning, emotion or passion. And thatís what I love most about photography. In a society where so many people are glued to something electronic 24 hours a day, thereís something timeless and endearing about a simple static photograph. No matter what technologies come and go, photographs will always be important and treasured.
I sincerely appreciate your interest in my work!
ďPhotography presents such a great challenge: to take on a world full of equipment and a world full of subjects, and see what you can come up with. There are no rules, no right and wrong. There is only good, and the pursuit of better.Ē
