F Michael Wells is a fine arts painter living and working in Oakland, California. He is represented by Big Pagoda and LIMN in San Francisco and DIVA in Seattle. He is most noted for his 'Light Modulator' paintings that use incident light reflecting off highly textured oil paint to create unusual optical effects. These paintings look startlingly 3-dimensional in person and appear to undulate with light as the viewer passes by. Michael has been painting Light Modulators on canvas, aluminum and wood since 1988. One large early work, 'Amethyst Gate', (o/c 99in x 88in), is in the permanent collection of the Oakland Museum.
The video below shows Michael working on the 6 foot x 10 foot Light Modulator, 'Penumbra' now in a private San Francisco collection :
Michael also paints very expressive mixed media paintings and is working on another long-term series called 'Crossings.' Be sure to visit his web site: rawPAINT.com to see examples of this work.
