BACKGROUND: Born in 1965, Frances McMahon has had an avid interest in illustrating Australia's beautiful native birds since the age of 5. Using a minute brush, each painting may take up to 165 hours to complete. Some details are so fine they may only be seen with a magnifying glass.
Developed over many years, her self-taught technique consists of airbrushed backgrounds, with the main work completed in watercolour.
Ensuring the longevity of each original painting, only the finest quality materials are used, including 1,680gsm conservation board for the ground. All works are framed to conservation standard, using Alpharag museum quality 100% cotton matting, and Tru-Vue glass, which cuts out 97% of damaging ultra-violet rays.
All paintings (except 'Waiting for the Rains') are available as DIGITAL PRINTS in your choice of size: from postcard to poster. The original artworks are scanned onto CD ROM as a huge 60MB file. Needless to say, the print output and resulting quality from such a large file is absolutely stunning. Please contact me for further details/prices.
Commissions are welcome. You may notice my prices have increased in recent years. This is because demand exceeds supply, and I now work to a flat hourly rate. Each original work takes many months to complete, and like most things in life, you get what you pay for!
Frances has won numerous awards and prizes for her work, and has had her work reproduced as greeting cards. In addition, she has been a featured artist in 'Australian Artist' magazine on two occasions.
When not painting, she may be found at the local ice rink practicing her other passion: figure skating. She competes in local and National adult competitions, some of which may be viewed on YouTube. Log on to: www.youtube.com/glitteringgirl65
Married with three teenage children, her life is both busy and happy.
