I have been drawing and painting as a profession since 1972. As an early artist I focused on western subjects having grown up in west Texas. I traveled the west extensively gathering subject matter from ranches and making friends with working cowboys. My love for the mountains was always close at hand when painting and I began a transition to landscapes. I moved from Sedona, AZ to Colorado Springs, CO in 1980 where the mountains were now right outside the studio. A great number of my paintings are plein air. The act of painting outdoors forces me to be spontaneous and not focus on detail that is not important to the painting focal point. The work shows more vibrant and pure color and minimal brushwork (if it is successful). Sometimes these pieces also serve as field sketches for studio paintings.
