Gene K. Garrison’s art started before the writing.
Crayons aside, she seriously tested the waters when she
attended Arizona State University, Phoenix College, and Glendale Community College. It started out with Drawing and Perspective, watercolor, architectural drawing and ceramics, then blossomed into many courses in oil painting, life drawing, art history, sculpture, photography, cinematography, and so on. Then there were artists workshops where she learned to paint large from one instructor, developed a color sense from another, and acquired an independent experimental attitude, which is evident in both her art and her writing.

She founded Desert Artists, an artists’ cooperative in Cave Creek/Carefree, Arizona, where she and her husband, Bert, were active members for 16 years.

Currently she belongs to several art groups—one a critique group called Q2 Artists, the Sedona Arts Center, and the International Society of Experimental Artists. Garrison considers photography as art, and sometimes it is, so she is a member of the Sedona Camera Club in Sedona, Arizona.

She likes a hint of mystery in her work, and states, “I get a special feeling of satisfaction when my nature subjects look like abstract art, and my abstract art looks like nature. I don’t expect all viewers to see the same things in my art, and am pleased when they don’t. I like audience participation.”

Gene Garrison joined Fine Art America on July 19th, 2010.
